Living in River Oaks: A Neighborhood Guide

River Oaks has been one of Houston's most admired neighborhoods for a century. Its live oak canopies, gracious homes and quiet boulevards sit just minutes from Downtown, the Galleria and the Texas Medical Center. This guide covers what daily life here looks like, from where to walk for coffee to how long the commute takes, written by the team at NOVEL River Oaks, at the corner of Willowick and Westheimer.

Where River Oaks Is and What It Borders

River Oaks covers about 1,100 acres inside the 610 Loop, roughly halfway between Downtown and Uptown. Buffalo Bayou runs along its northern edge, Shepherd Drive marks the east, Willowick Road the west and Westheimer Road the south. NOVEL River Oaks sits where those last two meet, at the neighborhood's southwest corner.

The neighborhood was developed in the 1920s by brothers Will and Mike Hogg, children of Texas Governor Jim Hogg, with attorney Hugh Potter. Today it holds about 1,600 homes, most of them single-family residences on tree-lined lots. Its neighbors are just as well known: Upper Kirby to the south, Montrose and Neartown to the east, Greenway Plaza to the southwest and Uptown and the Galleria to the west.

What Daily Life Is Like on Foot from Westheimer and Willowick

Much of River Oaks is built for the car, which makes the blocks around Westheimer and Willowick unusual. From NOVEL River Oaks, residents can walk to:

  • Looscan Neighborhood Library in about 3 minutes
  • Fielding's and Anthony's New York Italian, which are on NOVEL River Oak's own ground floor

A typical Saturday might start with a walk to Central Market, continue with lunch at Highland Village and end with dinner downstairs, all without moving the car.

Parks: Levy, Memorial and River Oaks Park

  • Memorial Park - At about 1,500 acres, Memorial Park is Houston's largest urban park, nearly twice the size of New York's Central Park, with roughly 30 miles of trails. The Seymour Lieberman Exer-Trail is one of the busiest running paths in the country.
  • Levy Park - This six-acre park in Upper Kirby, about 8 minutes by car, reopened in 2017 after a $15 million renovation. It has a performance pavilion, a dog park, a community garden, a playground and free fitness classes.
  • River Oaks Park - A neighborhood park at 3600 Locke Lane with courts, a playground and a community center, a short drive north. A renovation of the community center and courts is scheduled through mid-2027.

Shopping: Highland Village, River Oaks District and the Galleria

  • Highland Village, at 4055 Westheimer, has served the neighborhood since the 1940s. It mixes national favorites such as Apple, Crate & Barrel, Williams Sonoma and Anthropologie with local boutiques and restaurants.

Culture: Bayou Bend and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

Now the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's house museum for American decorative arts, it is surrounded by 14 acres of organically maintained gardens. The main MFAH campus and the rest of the Museum District are about 10 minutes away. The River Oaks Theatre, one of Houston's best-loved art-house cinemas, is a short drive east.
